Mum has been approved for a Home Care Package. What happens now, and how long will we have to wait?

Hearing that your mum has been approved for a Home Care Package is a big step forward. But it's natural to wonder what happens next and how long it will take for the package to be available. Here's a guide to help you understand the process and make the most of this time.

What Happens After the Approval Letter?

  1. You’ll Receive an Approval Letter
    • This letter confirms your mum's eligibility, the level of Home Care Package she has been approved for, and a copy of her support plan.
    • It will also indicate her priority level for receiving care.

  2. Waiting for the Package to be Assigned
    • There is high demand for Home Care Packages, so there may be a wait before one becomes available.
    • Estimated Wait Times:
      • Level 1: 3 - 6 months
      • Level 2: 6 - 9 months
      • Level 3: 9 - 12 months
      • Level 4: 12 - 15 months

  3. Prepare While You Wait
    • Research Providers: Use the Find a Provider Tool or call My Aged Care on 1800 200 422 to explore local providers who can meet your mum’s needs.
    • Understand Costs: Look into potential costs and fees for Home Care Packages. Some contributions may be required based on financial circumstances.
    • Make a Checklist: The My Guide to Aged Care tool can create a personalised checklist to keep track of what to do next.

  4. Get Care Sooner (If Needed)
    • While waiting, consider accessing support through the Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP) for basic services.
    • If needed, explore non-government-funded services for immediate support.

  5. You’ll Receive a ‘Get Ready’ Letter
    • About three months before your mum’s package becomes available, she’ll receive a letter advising her to get ready.
    • Use this time to:
      • Finalise your choice of provider.
      • Confirm availability and discuss services.

  6. The Package is Assigned
    • You’ll receive a letter with a referral code that your chosen provider will use to access the details of your mum's assessment and support plan.
    • Important: You have 56 days to enter into a Home Care Agreement. If you need more time, you can request an extension of 28 days.
