I’m worried about caring for Mum all the time. What happens if I need a break or something unexpected comes up?
It’s completely understandable to feel this way. Caring for your mum can be rewarding, but it can also be exhausting, both physically and emotionally. Taking a break is not only okay — it’s important for both of you. That’s where respite care can help.
What is Respite Care?
Respite care gives you, as a carer, a chance to rest and recharge while ensuring your mum is well looked after. It also provides her with an opportunity to meet new people and enjoy a change of scenery. Respite care can be for a few hours, a few days, or even a few weeks, depending on your needs.
Types of Respite Care Available
1. Emergency Respite Care
If something unexpected happens, like illness or an urgent situation, emergency respite care can step in quickly.
- What to Do: Call Carer Gateway on 1800 422 737 for immediate help.
- Care can be provided at home, in the community, or in an aged care home.
2. Flexible Respite (Care in Your Home)
A paid carer can come to your home during the day or overnight, giving you time to rest or attend to personal needs.
- Best for: Short breaks while still keeping your mum comfortable at home.
- Provided under the Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP).
3. Centre-Based Respite (Care Outside Your Home)
This type of respite care happens at a community center or day club and usually runs between 10 AM and 3 PM. It offers social interaction and activities for your mum.
- Best for: Daytime breaks while your mum enjoys social activities.
- Transport to and from the center may be available.
4. Cottage Respite (Overnight Care)
Your mum can stay overnight or for a weekend in community-based accommodation.
- Best for: Short stays (2-3 days) in a home-like setting.
- Provided under the CHSP.
5. Residential Respite (Care in an Aged Care Home)
If your mum needs more intensive care, she can stay in an aged care home for a few days to a few weeks.
- Best for: Longer breaks or when 24/7 care is needed.
- She will receive the same care and services as permanent residents, including meals, personal care, and activities.
- You can access up to 63 days of subsidized care per year, with extensions available if needed.
